Earth Day underwater cleanup
Volunteers from the Tacoma Scuba Community are joining forces to save the environment for Earth Day. The cleanup will take place at Point Defiance Boathouse, Tacoma. Last year's event removed 810 pounds of trash from the area's waters. This cleanup is an ongoing effort to protect marine life and preserve our environment. It's a great way of promoting your business and meeting other people who enjoy diving.
Organisers plan to bring together kayakers and scuba divers to take out fishing gear from the Tacoma waterfront. Once the net is removed, divers will use a boat elevator to haul it out of the water. Wounded Warriors can help participants remove large quantities of trash and other debris. Organizers are hoping the cleanup will help preserve our waters and provide a unique experience for the community.

Rockfish survey
Scuba divers can participate in a Tacoma SCUBA-based rockfish survey to help save endangered species. This dive is part a citizen science collaboration between Harbor WildWatch and the NOAA. All divers are welcome to join the survey, and there is no survey experience necessary. Training takes place during the dive brief. The participant must be certified to take part in night diving.
In 1998, WDFW started a multiyear mark-recapture program near Westport, Washington. This monitoring system, which includes five annual releases for black rockfish, is part of a sport fishery tag recovery monitoring system. These fish were released from pinnacles that were fished by Westport charter fishing boats. This survey involves the placing of two wire tags in the opercular muculature of these fish in order for them to be identified after capture.
Easy exit with only a few pounds trash
If you're looking for a place to go scuba diving in the greater Tacoma area, consider the waters near Commencement Bay. This Earth Day, 47 pounds of trash was collected by volunteers from the water by scuba divers. Octopuses, fishing net, and glass bottles made up the majority of the garbage. The clean-up was organized by the Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST), part of Highline Community College. The previous MaST cleanup had removed hundreds of tons of trash from the waters surrounding Des Moines.
Observation of the wounded bull sea lion
Tacoma, Washington divers had the chance to witness an extraordinary sight while scubadiving. Scuba divers were stunned to see a bull sea lion wounded by an arrow. The shark bite left a scar on the eye of the blind animal. Bjorn was then taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles, where rescuers helped him gain weight. Bjorn is now the name of the sea-lion after a character from the TV series "Vikings." This mighty creature is almost 400 pounds in weight and is currently residing at Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

In October, a Tacoma diving group saw this amazing sight. It was their first encounter with a sealion during a dive. They were so excited to be able to share the experience with other scuba divers. Observations of the sea lions reveal their playful nature. The sea lion pups will often play in the water with divers and form groups of like-aged friends. The pups like to play with divers as well, jumping into the sea to give them toys or interact with bubble streams.
